| KORAT, Thailand (AFP) - The SEA Games have closed amid celebrations by victorious Thailand and lingering ill-feeling among many countries who said the hosts had benefited from unfair judging.
Thailand bagged 183 golds out of a total 477, well above their pre-tournament target of 150 gold. Malaysia snagged the second most gold with 68, while Vietnam came in third with 64.
Thailand also came out on top in athletics, felling many SEA Games records, while Singapore were kings of the pool and Indonesia swept the badminton gold medals.
But the issue that refused to go away was that of unfair judging -- nothing unusual for the Southeast Asian Games.
The most dramatic episode came in the boxing ring on Thursday, when six Philippine fighters retired in a protest over the judging. Philippine athletes were slated to fight in seven of the ten gold medal bouts against the host nation and their actions helped Thailand sweep all ten boxing gold.
"We're not blaming Thailand. What we want corrected are the problems that have been with the AIBA (Amateur International Boxing Association) for many years," Philippines' chef de mission Monico Puentevella told AFP.
He said the decision to retire from the fights was taken by the boxers following the results in the women's contests Wednesday. On Wednesday, Manny Lopez, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, called the boxing competition a "comic show" after Thailand won six out of the seven women's events.
Even Indonesia's Olympic badminton champion Taufik Hidayat -- also champion here -- got in on the act, accusing officials of trying to aid a Thai player on Wednesday. He was ordered to the stands after a heated exchange with an umpire.
Malaysia's New Straits Times Saturday reported more allegations of favouritism in the scoring in gymnastics after a Thai competitor pipped a Malaysian to the gold. "They did not want to disappoint the (watching sports) minister so they manipulated the points," Malaysian team manager I. Paramaspathy told the newspaper. "This is utter rubbish."
The weightlifting competition also drew allegations of biased judging in favour of Thai athletes. But Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani played down the issue, telling Malaysia's Bernama news agency that complaints in subjective sports such as martial arts and gymnastics were common.
The issue of unfair judging is not new to the biennial SEA Games. This year's event marked a role reversal for Thailand, who levied similar claims against the Philippines at the 2005 Games there. Aside from concerns over the scoring, another question is whether the Games have become just a sideshow, overshadowed by other regional events such as the East Asian Games, which involve sporting powerhouses China and Japan.
The Bangkok Post reported that interest outside of where most of the events were taking place in Korat, in the country's northeast, was muted.
Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam took part in the competition, with East Timor the only country not to win any medals.
Laos will host the next SEA Games in 2009, where events are set to be cut from the 40-plus in Thailand. Two Thai athletes were also expelled from this year's competition after failing drug tests, the Sports Authority of Thailand said early last week. | |
