Social networking pioneer Friendster.com restored its service Wednesday after a power outage caused the site to go offline intermittently for several days.
An announcement on the Friendster blog said the site had undergone maintenance since Friday last week due to a power outage in the company's outsourced data center in Santa Clara, California.
A separate report on the Data Center Knowledge site (
www.datacenterknowledge.com) said the power outage occurred after the Santa Clara data center operated by Quality Technology Services switched from utility power to backup diesel generators.
The resulting downtime led to missing or inconsistent friends' lists on the popular networking site, which fueled rumors that Friendster had been hacked. Several blogs said a virus named h4xor-niytmare had infiltrated the site but the company denied this.
A November 18 post on the Friendster blog said the Web site has already restored the friends' lists of Friendster's 85 million registered users.
"Friendster.com is fully functional and everything is back to normal. Every registered user’s friend list has been restored, all 85 million of them! We truly appreciate your patience over the past few days as our dedicated product and engineering teams have been working non-stop to bring your friend lists back," it said.
Friendster USA vice-president for marketing David Jones earlier said 94 percent of Internet users in the Philippines have a Friendster account. He said that while other competitors are overlapping in geographical areas as users maintain different social networking accounts, at least 82 percent of Friendster users are distinct from users of other social networks.
Jones said the success of Friendster in Asia, particularly in the Philippines, stems from the strong familial culture of Asians. "Filipinos are very family oriented, a very social people and Friendster is hopefully doing a job of getting them connected," he said.
He said Friendster is currently ranked the third most popular social networking site in the world with over 80 million registered users. It is still the number one social networking site in Asia with over 50 million registered users and 34 monthly unique visitors.
Jones said Friendster users in Asia are primarily 16-30 years old. Fifty-five percent of Friendster users in the region are female and the rest are male.
