Recording Problems

Alright so I have a fashion show gig this Sunday and I have to record the music and announcer who will be using my equipment. I will be using my Connectiv but probably PCDJ VJ instead of Torq because I'll be using my Mic through my mixer instead of thru the Connectiv becuase the announcer is on the other side of the room and I only have a 50 foot XLR cable and not the kind that goes into the Connectiv.

So this is the problem> I tried recording the mix (like I usually do, except on my desktop) by hooking up the output from my mixer to the mic input on my laptop. Then I tried recording with Audacity, however, the only thing I recorded was the Timecode sound from the PCDJ Timecodes, what gives? The Connectiv is connected to my laptop, so does that mean if I try recording anything with Audacity, that it will only record the Timecode sound? If that is true, what can I do to record the mix, because as I'm sure many of you know, laptop sound cards are a PITA and only have headphones/mic jacks.

So, I really don't know what to do, any advice would be appreciated. If my only choice is to buy an external sound card, please advise on which one (I just need one that'll be able to record, kinda tight on cash atm
